Thoughts on Body Image

I am a fitness fanatic and health food junkie. Let me tell you, it is tough not to get caught up in comparison when you are in a field full of super-fit fitness models! I am also a mom of 2 beautiful children for which it is my deepest desire to be a great role model of health. I have spent the past few years really honing in on this idea of holistic health versus lean or fit or the idea of a perfect physique. Now don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with these goals.  I have tremendous respect for the discipline it takes to achieve a show-worthy physique, or low body fat, it’s just not what’s important to ME at this phase of my life.

I am perfectly imperfect. That is my battle cry. I have spent a lifetime (ok I’m only 39 but there has been a lot of growth in the past 20 years) finding a way to love myself where I am while still maintaining hope for change in the future, and a drive to keep striving. I am always goal setting, dreaming about the future, looking forward to trying something new, feeling restless in the NOW. But I have come to learn that NOW holds beautiful moments. NOW slips away much too fast if you don’t give it the attention it deserves.  And right NOW I love this body that has birthed 2 babies, maintained good blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and has the energy and strength to keep up with the 20 somethings.

Now is a season of holistic HEALTH for me. I have found my sweet spot. And I want to inspire other women to find theirs. As women we have so much pressure to do it all and be beautiful and fit while doing it. We don’t give each other enough grace or encouragement. We get caught up in the idea that if we can just lose that last few pounds, or that last 2% body fat, or that dimple on the back of our legs we will finally be satisfied.   I’m here to tell you that when you embrace this idea of a HEALTHIER you versus a FITTER you, you will begin to lose those impossible expectations for yourself and begin to love yourself right where you are.

This doesn’t mean you have to give up on your goals, in fact it’s quite the opposite. What it means is that in pursuit of your goals you will respect yourself and love the fact that you are contributing to a HEALTHIER you. This is about developing a positive body image that makes you feel proud of your hard work and great nutrition choices every time you look in the mirror. It’s also about giving yourself grace when you slip up and everything doesn’t go according to plan.  Life is messy. There’s no doubt about it. But my hope is that my words will begin to flip the switch for women about their bodies. My hope is that we will begin to exercise and eat real food with the intention of complete HEALTH.  My hope is that we can begin to look in the mirror and see beauty, and quit seeing all the imperfections.

I create a supportive environment that enables you to articulate and achieve your goals. I apply a concept called bioindividuality, which means that every BODY is uniquely different and what is healthy for one person may not be for another. I believe that food is so much more than just fuel; it is medicine. With this philosophy, I aim to change the lives of my clients by reducing risk factors for disease, and helping them achieve strength and vitality so they can LIVE WELL.
